Success Story

Mobile weighing solution for clean rooms

As part of a project for their client Boehringer Ingelheim, Baumgartner & Co sought a mobile weighing solution for weighing UDF vessels (ultrafiltration) in clean rooms. The solution needed to provide high-precision weighing results and also be easy to clean and able to withstand transportation.

Abstract

Boehringer Ingelheim makes use of UDF vessels when manufacturing its pharmaceutical products under clean room conditions. These vessels must be weighed precisely, transported to other production areas or, in some cases, put into storage. With the mobile weighing solution developed using the hygienic weighing module Contego® from Sartorius Intec, Boehringer Ingelheim can count on a high degree of precision across the weighing range, while maintaining optimum hygiene standards and avoiding damage during transportation.

Requirements

Weighing, batching and filling are important steps in the manufacturing process for many different products. This is especially true of the pharmaceutical industry, in which these steps are often crucial. Working with concentrated substances calls for high-precision weighing results. Moreover, stringent hygiene standards must be maintained, as contamination of products must be avoided under all circumstances.

The manufacturing systems used in the pharmaceutical industry are often designed to cater for small batch sizes and offer a high degree of flexibility. Materials need to be transported to other production areas for subsequent manufacturing steps, and exacting hygiene requirements mean that it is essential for the manufacturing system to be thoroughly cleaned on a regular basis, in some cases using abrasive disinfectants. Any materials used for the system components must therefore be able to withstand these substances. Any components connected to the process vessels must also be able to withstand being transported to other production areas.

Boehringer Ingelheim required a mobile weighing solution for a 50 l UDF vessel weighing 320 kg, to be used under clean room conditions following ultrafiltration and prior to the product filling stage. In addition to being resistant to cleaning agents and transportation, the weighing solution had to be able to connect to the existing PLC.
